The Conservative party believe that poorer families are not benefiting from the child trust fund. The have said the majority of children who will benefit from the Labour introduced scheme will be those from wealthier families. This is based on statistics stating that 82% of parents who live in the richest ten areas of the UK have set up CTF accounts for their children, but fewer than 70% of those residing in the poorest ten areas have.

What are the reasons for this? It theory it is they who should be more keen to take advantage of the scheme as they could do with more government assistance. The Tories claim that many are unaware of the existence of the scheme, therefore suggesting that the government has done a poor job of publicizing it and educating people to its benefits.

It is possible, though, that it purely comes down to the fact that wealthier people tend to have more money available to them to invest. For the Child Trust Fund to be really beneficial it is necessary to invest further, with family and friends allowed to invest up to £1,200 per year. The original £250 voucher from the government shortly after a child is born, plus a further £250 voucher seven years later will not have a huge impact once a child turns eighteen. Therefore it is possible that many parents who cannot afford to further invest, don’t think it has any value, although it could be argued that £500 plus interest is better than nothing.

Many are in the situation of simply being unable to further invest. Feeding and clothing children now is more important than saving for their futures; many have no choice but to think about the present. By the time today’s children turn eighteen they may be earning themselves so providing for them now is more important. In a way not taking advantage of the child trust fund could be a missed opportunity. It is possible that taking full advantages could mean an eighteen year old could receive £24,000. But in reality the majority of parents are unable to invest anywhere near the £1,200 each year.

There is much debate as to the future of the child trust fund. The Conservatives have said that they will make the child trust fund only available to the poorest third of families, as they are the ones who need the help most. But considering the statistics that they have highlighted, would this be a positive solution? Although almost 70% of the poorest families do open a CTF account, many of these will not be regularly investing, therefore making the scheme relatively ineffective. It is the wealthier families who take full advantage, so it is likely better to either leave the scheme as it is or withdraw it altogether.

It was a heart pounding week on Wall Street as traders and investors locked in profits during 2010’s first round of earnings season. While it is normal to see selling of shares after good news hits the market, last weeks melt down was over exaggerated and for good reasons.

In short, we expected good earnings and that is why the markets have been crawling higher the past couple months (buy on rumor, sell on news). But what made last weeks sell off so strong was the fact the market was way overbought on the short term time frame and looking ready for a correction already. So we saw twice the selling pressure crammed into one week.

Looking back at a 12 year chart of the Dow Jones Industrial Average we can see the market is now trading at a major resistance level. There are two scenarios the market will likely follow in the coming 12 months. And it could take a year for each of these scenarios to unfold.

Scenario #1 – The market could top then start heading lower to test the 2009 March low. I don’t want this but it could still happen. Topping is a process. Unlike most bottoms which happen very quickly, tops tend to drag out much longer. In this case I figure we are looking at 4-12 month time frame for the market to truly roll over and confirm that we are in a major bear market again.

Scenario #2 – If the market holds up relatively well and forms a bull flag then we can expect to see higher prices in the future. If this happens it will take 4-12 months to unfold also.

Both scenarios have characteristics associated with them, so as the market progresses I will update on the market internals which will help tell us if the underlying market is holding up well or deteriorating. Only time will tell and we will play it one candle at a time.

Dow Jones Industrial Average – What Is Next?

Gold Stocks – Rockets or Rocks?

The gold stock index closed below its support trend line which held up for over a year. This is not a good sign for gold or gold stocks but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Simple technical analysis is telling us to be cautious at these price levels. If we zoom way out on the charts the current price level and chart patterns on these charts scare me. The gold stock/Gold ratio chart is trading under resistance and the HUI (gold stock index) is trading near the 2008 high. What I do not like is the technical breakdown on the HUI monthly chart. You can see the trend line break on the chart with my small zoomed in picture.

The good news is that everything looks to be extremely over sold on the 60 minute charts so I am expecting a bounce across the entire market for a 1-5 day dead cat bounce. Friday we did see gold stocks move up strong off their lows out performing the price of gold. This is positive for gold and stocks. Depending on how that unfolds we could take a short term momentum play to profit from a possible leg lower.

Precious Metals ETF Daily Charts – Gold & Silver

Gold and silver lost some shine last week as they plunged towards their next support level. A bounce is expected but then I feel we are heading lower and this will likely shake out the majority of traders before starting another rally higher.

On Jan 13th I posted a report indicating gold and silver were headed lower because of the recent price action as silver and gold both had a Pop & Drop chart pattern with heavy selling volume on the 60 minute chart:

http://www.thegoldandoilguy.com/articles/commodity-gold-futures-trading/

Energy Fund Trading – USO & UNG

I am really starting to like USO for an oversold bounce off support. I would like to see the market reaction on Monday before we do anything. With everything closing near their lows on Friday, panic selling from fear may creep into the minds of traders and investors.

Natural Gas fund looks to be setting up a bull flag. It will be interesting to watch this progress.

Commodity and Stock Market Index Trading Conclusion:

This month looks and feels like last Jan – March, but reversed. The market is now getting choppy as the bulls and bears fight for direction making is difficult to swing trade. Times like these are best for intraday traders, not swing traders. Trading tops is actually much more difficult than trading a bottoming market in my opinion so I will be picky with trade setups. My number one goal is to preserve capital and avoid choppy market conditions as part of managing risk.

Final trading thoughts, I look for the broad market to get a possible bounce this week, but I feel lower prices are still to come. The USO oil fund looks prime for the picking and that could be our next trade.

Learning about the stock market is crucial to your understanding about the world of finance and money and how they inter-relate with each other. Learning about the stock market means learning about: 1. How the stock market functions and what factors influence its movements
2. The stock market’s past performance and history
3. Money management and personal financial management
4. How to select and run with winning companies How the Stock Market Functions Stock markets are fairly volatile places where prices fluctuate literally every second while business trade is happening. Many factors affect the demand and supply of stock and hence their prices. In general, the economic outlook, the individual company’s stock prices, any pending news (good or bad) and announcements by the company, regulatory changes to the market, breakthroughs and product or technology innovations, and other factors like calamities, weather, etc are all stock market influencers. You should subscribe to a local newspaper or read an online service such as MarketWatch to find out about the factors influencing the stock markets globally as well as locally in your region of the world. Understand the Past Performance and History of Stock Markets Learning about the stock market implies learning about the historical data of the stock market so you can learn from the mistakes of others. You should brush up on the history of fundamentals such as accounting and finance terms, what has caused the stock market crashes of the past and what has led to stock market buoyancy. Understanding these factors will help reduce the learning curve ahead of you. Money Management Understanding the basics of money management and getting your personal finances in order are some of the crucial first steps to learning about the stock market. You should have a basic understanding about economic and finance terms such as savings, investment, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, balance sheets and more. How to Pick Winning Companies Most of all, stock market investing is about choosing to ride with the winners. You must have a good antenna for spotting winners in the market; companies that have a good business model, sound management practices, are in the news for their innovations and positive approaches to business, keep clear and transparent accounting records, are functioning in a stable or growing industry sector, have a respectable book value and Price to Earnings ratio (P/E ratio), etc. So as you can see, learning about the stock market is an essential strategy before you can begin investing in the stock market. But once you are over the initial learning hump, the lucrative world of stock market riches can be yours.

The word, investing, can generate anxiety and indecisiveness for individuals starting out in the investment game. Numerous investment options exist including mutual funds, certificates of deposits, stocks, bonds, commodities, cash flow notes, and real estate. Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of each type of investment can help investors develop a solid financial portfolio to achieve their long and short term goals.

Successful investing can be accomplished with the help of a good investment company. Individuals can create financial investment accounts through personal consultations or by using online tools provided by their investment firm. Popular investing companies include Merrill Lynch, BNY Mellon, Charles Schwab, Vanguard and Fidelity.

Investing in stocks allows investors to purchase a portion of a company. Most people think of buying stock in mega-corporations such as Wal-Mart and Microsoft. However, investing in stock shares for privately-held and start-up corporations can sometimes provide hefty dividends based on corporate profits.

Many people do not realize the bond market offers more investment opportunities than the stock market. Bond investments include asset-backed securities such as home mortgages, home equity loans, student loans, and credit card receivables, and international bonds. Investors can purchase bonds by working directly with a bond broker or through the U.S. Treasury website at TreasuryDirect.com.

Mutual funds allow investors to develop diversified financial portfolios without having to buy a variety of investment products. Mutual funds investments include stock, bonds, asset-backed securities and real estate.

Commodities are a good investment choice which can produce significant profits. However, investors should have a good grasp on which commodities produce the most income and how commodities are traded. The most common commodities include wheat, sugar, oil, gold and lumber.

Business investments can be a good choice for seasoned investors who possess a strong working knowledge of corporate investing practices. Investing in businesses can range from purchasing shares of a start-up business, through angel investing, or investing in large business entities by pooling resources through an investment group.

Real estate investments can include investing in physical properties or real estate notes. Common realty investments include buying homes for rental properties, lease-to-own, or house flipping; commercial real estate investment properties; and purchasing real estate investment trusts (REIT) shares.

It is important to thoroughly understand the different types of real estate investments and the pros and cons of each. Good real estate investing information resources include CREOnline.com, REIClub.com and Trump University.

Short and long term real estate investment options exist. Short term investments might include seller carry back trust deeds, promissory notes, house flipping, and REIT shares. Long term investments could include rental and lease-to-own properties.

The Internet offers a plethora of financial and real estate investing information and resources. It is best to stick with well-known investing firms when starting out. Conduct online research and consult with three or four investment advisers to determine which company is best suited for your needs.

Self Invested Personal Pensions (SIPPs) have gained an increasing amount of interest in real estate investments from pension holders over recent years. The concept of SIPP plans was originally introduced in 1989, creating a ‘hands-on’ approach for pension holders to make full decisions of how and where their pension is invested. For real estate to be eligible for SIPP approval, the properties are required to undergo strict criteria approval, ensuring greater security as an investment option.

Pension Benefits

The development of SIPP plans have enabled integration and flexibility for pension holders to determine how their funds are invested, enabling control over the resulting returns. Traditional pension plans have often been limited in diversification, where investment options were entirely controlled by the fund managers.

The introduction of SIPP plans has created the opportunity for under-performing investments to be changed at the request of the pension holder, maximising the return potential. The flexibility of a SIPP offers many distinctive investment advantages, avoiding the problems associated with traditional plans that may be trapped into financial losses during periods of economic downturn.

Property Management Benefits

Investments into a wide range of properties can be obtained through property based investment funds. Real estate investments through SIPPs can also be purchased through property funds, where a diverse selection of property investments are selected and managed through field experts. This option allows for expansive return potential and lowers the risk factors involved.

Acting as an individual investor will enable the SIPP holder to benefit from personal control over the pension fund. Owning investment properties through a SIPP fund avoids the inconveniences of mortgages, complicated legal issues, high capital outlay and overall property management issues.

Tax Benefits

Tax benefits for property investments through a SIPP offer excellent opportunities for real estate with an absence of capital gains and inheritance taxes. Rental income from SIPP property investments is also devoid of taxes, while the rental income is paid back into the SIPP plan enabling the pension to further increase.

Contributions towards tax relief for SIPPs often follow the same regulations as traditional personal pensions, yet variations may occur in different countries. The full details, restrictions and requirements can be obtained from a tax advisor or financial advisor.

Personal Benefits

Personal control over the investment direction of the pension plan is one of the main benefits that differentiate a SIPP from a traditional pension. The flexibility of SIPPs has assisted in the growth of interest for the new options in pension management. The freedom to select assets either personally or with the advice and assistance of a financial advisor ensures that all pension holders, whether experienced in investments or not, are able to benefit from the advantages of SIPPs.

Although there is a restriction of up to 50% of the fund value to be used for investments, business colleagues, partners and other SIPP members can make joint investments allowing for a sizeable pooling of funds.

Investing in real estate through a SIPP offers excellent advantages for flexibility and control over personal pension plans. Although there are many tax and personal advantages, management fees are likely to be charged.

The property purchased through the investment fund may not be available for personal use, as the property will effectively be an asset of the pension fund. Both pension funds and the property to be purchased will be required to have authorisation from the Financial Services Authority (FSA). Full details and advice should be obtained from a pension advisor or a tax specialist to receive advice tailored to individual requirements.

Investing in penny stocks is often considered to be a lucrative option as they can develop into big stocks, bringing massive wealth with them. However, it is rare that a penny stock will develop into a mid cap stock. The high risk involved in trading these stocks and their susceptibility to scams scripted by manipulative brokers often keeps seasoned investors away from them. This alone could be part of the reason why they rarely become mid cap stocks.

Many believe that the capitalization of a company has nothing to with the price of its stocks. But there have been instances when many of these micro-cap stocks grew up to become small cap or mid cap stocks. However, these examples are so few they could be virtually counted on the fingers of one hand.

It takes intelligent investors and a lot of effort on the part of the management and the brokers to enable a stock to grow. Trading micro-cap stocks can often be an expensive proposition, so investors will typically limit what they invest in these stocks. The high amount of volatility and risk involved prevents them from doing any more than this. On the other hand, the mid-caps are considered as the most reliable way of generating long term wealth.

Mid cap stocks have lesser operational risk than the small cap stocks and are barely affected by changing market trends. This is not the case with penny stocks. There have been several instances when lucrative looking penny stocks proved to be nothing but scams.

These stocks were de-listed and the investors faced large losses as a result. According to experts, trading in penny stocks is far riskier than trading in blue-chip, mid-cap or large companies. With penny stocks you have a reduced chance of making money and more than a 90% chance of losing money.

Their performance is more investor-based, while that of big companies is based on fundamentals. Penny shares are traded on the pink sheets and many of them are not scrutinized by the SEC. Apart from this, the lack of liquidity and their high volatility has made these stocks vulnerable to scams.

Brokers take pains to show that certain worthless stocks are doing well. They often make transactions into their own overseas accounts to dupe investors. Most penny stocks are known to have lost their entire value – spelling large losses for the shareholders.

One of the jobs of we retired folks is reading. Universally, we have either discovered or rediscovered the joys of reading a good book, and take our reading very seriously. Most of us like fiction, which is to be expected given that our lives aren’t nearly as exciting as our favorite characters. There’s a lot to be said for curling up with a good book to either be entertained or educated. Dean Graziosi’s Profit From Real Estate Right Now, while not a thriller, is both entertaining and educational.

I remember my Dad saying “All real estate investments are good, as long as you live long enough to be able to sell it profitably”. A real truism if there ever was one. Dean’s book suggests that we not look at the negativity of today’s financial world, but focus on the opportunities in real estate that it affords. First, he recommends looking and evaluating the real estate trends of the market where you live. Using the guides he gives will educate you as to what you local market is doing, and how best to evaluate potential investments. The Las Vegas market is certainly different than the Charlotte market, and he gives you tips on what to look for in making your market assessment.

Then, there are other things to consider. Because the markets today aren’t appreciating as they once were, Dean states that we cannot use the same “buy low”, wait a brief period of time, and “sell high” techniques that were once the gold standards for real estate profitability. This brings us back to the evaluation of local market trends, because, according to Dean, this is where your profitability lies. Because of the generally depressed real estate market nationwide, he feels that now is the best time to become educated in his philosophy, jump in and make a profit. In other words, he is saying to use this economic downturn, especially in real estate, to your financial advantage using his techniques.

Profit From Real Estate Right Now is not the first book he’s written. In fact, Dean Graziosi is a NY Times, USA Today, Amazon and Wall Street Journal best seller. I guess advertising on As Seen On TV commercials gives him an even greater exposure. At least that’s where I first saw the book advertised. I enjoyed reading the book for his insights into profiting in today’s down market. The summaries at the end of each chapter synthesized the information into a “to-do” guide for future easy reference. Also, it’s always good to read first hand accounts of the successes of those who have profited from his real estate experience and knowledge.

So, I’ve turned the book over to my investment club for them to read. I guess by the end of the month I’ll know if there is enough excitement and interest in the group for us to try to put Dean’s knowledge to work. Goodness knows we’ve invested a whole lot more with the possibility for a whole lot less profitability!

How I Pick Stocks

When I’m looking for stocks to trade most of the time I start by looking at various sectors of the market. I want to find out which sectors are performing really good and also the ones that are performing poorly.

After I decide which sectors I’m going to look into I narrow it further by picking out industries and sub industries throughout the sectors I’m looking at. Again I’m looking for the industries that are performing really well and also poorly. Then from there I start picking out individual companies. A lot of times I use a stock screener to do a lot of that work for me but I also like to do a lot of my own homework. Many times when doing your own research you can find quite a few other things as well.

You can also find what I like to call multipliers many times as well. For instance lets say you know of an airline stock that is performing below average and you also know that fuel prices are on the way up. You know that this is going to hurt all of the airlines but it is probably going to have an even worse effect on the airline or airlines that are already struggling. Also say if fuel prices are increasing you should know which companies this is going to effect in a good way. Find the oil producing companies that are already doing pretty well and invest in them. Also since you know that trucking companies also have a hard time dealing with increased fuel costs and that when they increase their prices many companies turn to the railroads to transport their goods so you are likely to be able to find a good railroad company and also take advantage of that.

I also use some technical analysis when choosing stocks. I am not one of those guys that believes you should make every decision base on what a chart says but I do like to make decisions base on trends and also find points of support and resistance. I also like to use them to find price channels and many times I will trade a stock that’s moving sideways based on it’s points of support and resistance and if I notice it gain momentum and break out I will go long if I notice it gain momentum moving down I go short.

It’s not any advanced formulas or technical indicators that influence my decisions they are all based primarily upon what’s currently happening and what I think is going to benefit or what is likely to lose the most from what’s happening throughout the world.
